15. A “New” Old Teaching Year with Dylan Esson

This episode features a conversation with high school history teacher Dylan Esson.  Dylan earned his PhD from University of California at Berkeley and loves to ski, read, race after his two daughters. In this conversation, Dylan and I discuss the challenges that students face with technology, apathy, and self-identity.

Dylan shares what he loves about teaching as well as the challenges he sees in the teaching profession, particularly after Covid. Dylan shares how he would love to shake up the school day by creating a more flexible model, giving more time to teachers to prep, and rethinking sports in education.

In This Episode I share:

  •  How busy students can be after school
  •  Why student apathy is high and motivation is low
  •  How understanding what his students have faced during the pandemic has given Dylan more compassion at school.
